Prayer Request

Please join me in praying for the family of a young woman named Leah Whitaker. Leah was a student at Indiana Wesleyan University and part of the Women's basketball team. She passed away this week, and my heart is heavy for her parents and other family members. I don't know Leah personally, but our church and the IWU community is grieving her loss as well.

May God's peace, comfort, and lots of grace surround the Whitaker family.

Our Carter Benjamin

On December 20, 2010, our OB-GYN discovered at our 28-week ultrasound that Sarah and the baby seemed to have very low levels of amniotic fluid. Concerned, the doctor sent us to the IU Prenatal Diagnosis Center to get a high-level ultrasound and meet with a neonatologist. Although worried, we were not prepared for the news we received at the appointment: Our little Carter Benjamin Westfall had not developed kidneys. While he could survive while inside Sarah, he could not live without kidneys after birth.

In the midst of the worst winter storm of the season, Carter Benjamin arrived five weeks early on February 2, 2011, weighing 5 lbs. and measuring 17 3/4 inches. We were able to enjoy one beautiful hour with our baby boy, an amazing blessing we were able to share with our family. Since finding out about Carter's condition, we have experienced more pain, more peace, more confusion, and more comfort than we ever imagined possible. However, God is our strength. Carter Benjamin is our joy.

You May Have Noticed a Few Changes...

We began this blog during my pregnancy to keep people informed about Carter's condition and about how we were doing as a family. Since Carter died, our updates have become fewer and farther between. It seems the purpose of this blog is changing as God continues to change our hearts.

We want to continue to tell Carter's story...the ways in which his life leaves daily imprints on our hearts as well as others. It's important for us to chronicle the ways in which God is redeeming this situation so we can continue to celebrate God's goodness and the gift Carter is to us.

In that same vein, I thought it was important to do a bit of a blog facelift and rename it. The blog address is still the same, but I hope the blog itself will take on "new feet" as Carter's life and story move forward in God's grace.

And thank you to everyone who has cared enough to keep tabs on Carter's story, on our family, and on how God continues to move. Your presence is felt.
